You may have heard this term a lot recently in regards to COVID-19 (aka Coronavirus). It has an important meaning for you personally.
The Term “Black Swan event" has been around on some level for Hundreds of years. No not the Natalie Portman movie about ballet.
It is used to refer to a very rare occurrence, usually financial. It was popularized in the book "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable" by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in 2007. Ironically released just before The 2008 Global Financial Crisis.
Taleb defines a Black Swan as:
“an outlier, as it lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility. It carries an extreme 'impact.' In spite of its outlier status, human nature makes us concoct explanations for its occurrence after the fact, making it explainable and predictable."
Or in simple terms a Black Swan event is:
Some Black Swan events in recent history have been The 2008 Global Financial Crisis, The 9/11 Attacks, and at least so far, it certainly seems fitting as a description for the widespread effects of the Coronavirus.
The fascinating thing is that the way to deal with a Black Swan event, is not to try to necessarily expect it. Rather, the best policy is to be as robust as possible so that you can weather it. Financially or otherwise.
Now while a Black Swan may all sound like doom and gloom there are in fact some very positive aspects to such events that create opportunity!
Black Swan events do two postive things:
Interestingly enough back in the market crash of 1987 Taleb was an Options Trader on the Stock Market. That day he became very successful by profiting on shares that usually would be unattractive but in a widely volatile market became quite profitable.
