I just bought a new lawn mower this weekend. I want to tell you about it. Why in the world should you care? It has to do with your whole life. It's a SCAG Cheetah. It has a pleather seat that is divinely cushioned. Shock absorbers under the seat that make you feel like you are carried on the backs of Angels. Zero turn steering designed by Elon Musk. Leg rests. Man sized cup holders…. I can go on
I swear it's my favorite seat in the house now. I'm trying to figure out a way to watch TV inside while sitting on my lawn mower outside. Im telling you this thing rides so smoove I could slide into your DMs with it. It's blazing fast too. I finish my 6 acre yard in a little over an hour. Reality check - it's expensive. Real expensive. Brand new this thing starts at 13k. That may seem crazy to you. Bonkers like Arkahm. But let me tell you about my old lawn mower aka “The Ghost”. For like the past 15 years, I've used this old beat up Toro tractor that I swear was around for WWII. All my friends call it the “Ghost” because it's been dead for at least a decade. Actually, it may have been dead when I first bought it. It has zero suspension. Every time I ride over a twig or pebble, I have to make an appointment with my chiropractor. It has the turning radius of a semi truck and the speed of a wheelchair. It takes me about 3 hours each week to mow. I was embarrassed to be seen on it by the neighbors driving by. One thing I will say about it though, it is tough. It just won't die. The Ghost will live long after I'm buried. Why should you care about any of this? The first time I mowed the lawn with my new Cheetah, I had a revelation. Why did I not invest in this years ago! As I mentioned before, for the past 15 years I have spent, well, wasted 3 hours a week mowing the lawn. For years, Decades! I wasted hours of my life just getting by. Doggedly enduring a situation I could have improved all along. Why did I not just upgrade? I was clinging to this old tractor. I had reluctantly accepted that the old way of doing things was getting by. It got the job done. After all, it was functioning. It did cut the grass. But I never knew how awful my life was. This one decision was life changing. I HAD to cut the grass. This was for sure. But it was a CHORE. I hated every minute of it. Dreaded it. I would pray for droughts so the grass wouldn’t grow. Now things are totally different. I look forward to mowing the lawn. I pray for rain. Hallelujah! I don’t have to cut the grass. I WANT to cut the grass! A chore became something to ENJOY. Using my new Cheetah saves me time, doesnt hurt my back, is something I can take pride in, and is actually fun! What does this have to do with you? As I rode atop my heavenly chariot, it dawned on me. This is how many people view fitness. As a chore. As something that has to be done. They just get by with the smallest investment they can make. But why invest in something you don't enjoy? How could you enjoy something you don't invest in? It may seem like a small thing. Mowing the lawn is a small thing in the grand scheme of life. Or is it? That's the point. I didn't enjoy cutting the grass because I was doing the bare minimum to get by. It was annoying, time consuming, down right painful sometimes. And the lawn didn’t even look nice. Simply put, I was being cheap. I was Scrooge riding “The Ghost” of Christmas Past. Don’t be like me. Don't be cheap about your Body, Performance, or especially Health. Don’t do just enough to hate it. It may seem like a small thing. But if you invest in it it will be life changing! Invest in a Professional. Hire a reputable personal trainer. Buy good training gear and equipment. Spend extra on nutritious food. Put forth the effort. Workout with intensity. The benefits you will get will far outweigh the effort you put in. Spend a little and look back with regret or spend a lot and look ahead with enjoyment. Don't hate what you need to do. Love what you want to do. Speaking of that... I gotta go.
